Workshop: Shadow Puppetry

It’s summer time and here’s a great workshop to keep yourselves busy.

About the workshop:

Shreyas and CraftCanvas bring to Ahmedabad a very unique workshop that involves Shadow Puppetry. This workshop is a hands on workshop conducted by Charmakari artisans from Andhra Pradesh. The workshop is open for children as well as adults.

Charmakari? What’s that?

Charmakari is a shadow puppetry art from in which the puppet maker is the puppeteer as well. These artists enact the nightlong shows of tales from our epics The Ramayana and The Mahabharata. Various body forms of puppets are sketched on sheets of leather, cut out to form flat puppets and then coloured. The different body parts are attached individually in order so that they may move independently. During the performance, the puppets are firmly held against a backlit white sheet of cloth and moved by means of bamboo sticks.

What will you learn in this workshop?

Through the workshop you will achieve three goals

  • Learn about traditional shadow puppetry techniques from the experts
  • Develop a storyline, make puppets and perform a puppet show
  • Work effectively in a team to maximize output

At the end of the workshop participants will be able to showcase their very own puppets in a creative story narrative!

What we love about it:

The workshop commences with a small introduction to the craft of Shadow Puppetry, which includes a small skit performed by the Award Winning Aritsan Thulasi Rao along with his co artisan Gangi Reddy. What’s more? Every batch has just about 25 participants and you get to draw out your very own characters, cut them and color them! You also get to bring them to life behind the smoke screen.

Where is the workshop?

At Shreyas, Ambavadi, Ahmedabad

What are the dates?

This 2 days workshop is scheduled three times. You can pick a date that is convenient to you: 29-30 April, 1-2 May, 3-4 May 2013. Timings are from 9.00 AM to 4.00 PM
