The World Heritage Week is being celebrated across Ahmedabad and Amdavadis are leaving no stone unturned. From musical concerts to Film Festivals, Heritage walks to photo exhibitions; there are so many ways to cherish the rich heritage of Ahmedabad.
Ahmedabad based artist Harshil Patel too wanted to create something that can represent the heritage of Ahmedabad not just for a week but for a lifetime. In the year 2008, he had created a series of modern and contemporary paintings – “Halo of Ahmedabad Heritage” which beautifully represented his love for heritage and his love for Ahmedabad. Five years later, in 2013 an enthusiastic Harshil and curator Chaitya Dhanvi Shah sat together to discuss their next show which would be based on heritage places in Ahmedabad.
According to Chaitya Dhanvi Shah, Director, Marvel Art Gallery, “As a gallery we wanted to create an art series based on Ahmedabad’s heritage but we wanted everyone to own it.” Thus they decided to convert this series into affordable serigraphs which more number of Amdavadis can own. The idea is to create a set of paintings over the next few months and launch the serigraphs at an exhibition during the World Heritage Week 2014.
Harshil painted his first painting in this series on 21st November. The painting entitled – “Golden glory of Manek Chowk” represents images of Manek Chowk, Rani no Hajiro and Manek Nath temple. The predominant colour used is yellow which symbolises walls from olden times. The varying black strokes illustrate the changing generations whereas the pop of pink signifies Rani no Hajiro and the red hues exemplify the story of Manek Baba and stand for Manek Nath temple. Sharing his vision, Harshil said, “I have used gold leaf on the surface of painting which symbolises the riches of Amdavad.”
If you too want a piece of Ahmedabad’s heritage in your home, you will have to wait for a while for Harshil to complete his series. We wish Harshil and Chaitya good luck for their upcoming series!
