Petition: Ahmedabad ‘JAALI’

The Ahmedabad ‘jaali’ in the Sidi Saiyyad Mosque is the most iconic image of Ahmedabad. Yet, the state of affairs around the mosque is sad. Stuti Saxena decided to take some action to improve the current conditions and has started a petition to beautify, preserve and maintain the famous Ahmedabad ‘jaali’ in the Sidi Saiyyad Mosque and the surrounding historical structures.

The Ahmedabad Blog connected with Stuti Saxena to understand her cause and spread awareness regarding the same.

The Ahmedabad Blog: We wanted to know what prompted you to start this petition and how many signatures are you looking for?
Stuti Saxena: Quest for art, cultural and heritage restoration is of prime importance for me. Being a student of history, archaeology has always remained a domain of interest for me. Monuments and other historical sites pronounce our rich and diverse cultural milieu. Such historic sites should be preserved.

The first symbol, which comes to one’s mind thinking of Ahmedabad, is the Ahmedabad ‘Jaali’; you would vouch for that. When I had been on a visit to see the magnificent ‘Jaali’, it was loathsome to witness the unkempt surroundings. Being a tourist site, such places ought to be preserved.

To be candid, I am looking forward to more than a lac signatures for ensuring sound action. This is Ahmedabad’s pride and we all should join in for the cause!

The Ahmedabad Blog: What is your next step once you have collected the signatures?

Stuti Saxena: A meeting with the ASI Ahmedabad officials; DM and relevant authorities shall follow the signature campaign.

The Ahmedabad Blog: Lastly, we would like to know a bit more about you; are you a student, professional, activist? And why is this cause important for you?
Stuti Saxena: I am associated with IIM Ahmedabad, presently assisting in research work. Hitherto, I was associated with NIF (www.nifindia.org) and SRISTI (www.sristi.org) as a Research Fellow. Earlier, I was working with IIM Indore and Bangalore as Academic Intern. As I said earlier, I am a student of history and nostalgic about archaeology; this is the adrenaline which forced me to take up this cause.
