Metrolink Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) is the proposed mass-transit rail system for the cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, India. MEGA is a Special Purpose Vehicle floated by the Government of Gujarat under The Companies Act, 1956 with the objective of providing safe, fast and eco-friendly transportation services to the public at affordable rates while simultaneously reducing the congestion on the roads. The metro rail project will be in integration with AMTS, BRTS, Railways and other modes of public transit system.
The proposed metro will cover a distance of 76 kilometers with 49 stations on the route and will have entirely elevated structure, ballast-less tracks, driverless air-conditioned coaches, GPS based rail tracking system, train destination indicators & stations with support infrastructure like automated fare collection, parking facilities, etc. The metro train system will be the fastest in the world with an average speed of close to 45 kms/hour.
Interestingly, the metro rail project won the Best Display Award at Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show 2013 for a miniature display exhibiting salient features of its project, which included models of depots and typical stations.
Just like the BRTS, this project too has different phases covering Western and Eastern parts of Ahmedabad separately. The 22.8-km-long first route is expected to complete in the next 2 years and Amdavadis can ride the metro from as early as 2015.
