Launched in 2009, the Joy of Giving Week is India’s “festival of giving”! This festival is celebrated each year from 2nd October to 8th October and Indians from across the nation are welcomed to host their events or conduct varied activities to celebrate the spirit of ‘giving’.
Ahmedabad actively celebrates the Joy of Giving Week with individuals from corporates, nonprofits, educational institutes and from all walks of life come together to create a difference and spread joy.
The biggest event hosted by the city would be the ‘Food for Change-2013’ which is hosted by Blind People’s Association (BPA). This event will give city based NGOs a platform to collect donations for various social causes. On October 6th, all NGOs will discuss their cause with donors and seek funding. This fund raising event will be followed by a gourmet meal which is sponsored by leading hotels of Ahmedabad including Courtyard By Marriott, Ahmedabad.
The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) celebrates the Joy of Giving Week each year and includes it as a part of ‘Prayaas’ – IIMA’s own social initiative. This year they have planned eight different events which include socially relevant events and fundraisers and 60 volunteers from the Institute are overlooking the activities. The main event is ‘A Day@IIMA’ which revolves around 50 members of the general public experiencing an average day at this institute. Moreover, 20 NGOs are also invited so as to reward them for their outstanding contribution towards the cause of underprivileged kids. These participants will be taken through the complete IIMA experience – classes, case studies, quizzes, club interactions and a campus tour.
Courtyard By Marriott, Ahmedabad celebrated the first day of this week with a Joyride to Kankaria for the Special Care Home Kids. These kids were bought in the hotel for a delicious lunch and then were escorted to the lake by the associates at Marriott. The hotel also plans a blood donation drive.
Azure Knowledge Corporation has undertaken clothes distribution drive at an orphanage and at Jyotisangh, blanket distribution for the homeless and is also organizing a blood donation camp. They have also taken up an interesting initiative of helping Ahmedabad Traffic Police by assisting them in traffic control and serving them with buttermilk and water. Apart from this, they also plan to offer employment opportunities to disabled individuals.
Saath Charitable Trust is celebrating the Joy of Giving Week by organizing a waste collection drive. Members of Saath’s Youth Force shall be visiting several societies across the city of Ahmedabad and will be encouraging the spirit of giving through a waste collection drive. The youth members will be collecting unwanted household items like pasti, old toys and books. Toys and books would be donated towards Saath’s Child Friendly Spaces programme, which reintegrates child labourers into education. Any money recovered from the pasti would go towards Saath’s Umeed programme that delivers skills training to slum youths for employability.
YUVA Unstoppable will be organizing various industrial and educational visits for the municipal school kids in order to give them first hand knowledge and experience of the various industries, aiding their education. Under the ‘Cleanliness for the Soul’ campaign, YUVA volunteers are going to explain the importance of hygiene and cleanliness to the kids and also inspire them by cleaning the campus of the school. This would encourage the kids to keep and maintain their school campus and other surroundings clean. They have also planned a unique initiative ‘Inspiring the Teachers’ which involves a photo shoot opportunity for 300 municipal school teachers who will be gifted their photo frames.
Riverside School, Ahmedabad is organizing an awareness event that involves children not just from Ahmedabad, but also from across the world. Their event ‘Design for Change’ is the largest global movement designed to give children an opportunity to express their own ideas for a better world and put them into action. This year, Design for Change reaches 34 countries and over 300,000 schools inspiring hundreds of thousands of children, their teachers and parents, to celebrate the fact change is possible and that they can lead that change!
