Ahmedabad is famous for a lot of things like IIM A, Gandhi Ashram, AkshardhamBut the list doesn’t end without the mention of the Gujarati version of pizzeria i.e. Jassuben nu pizza ! These mouth watering pizza’s are also tagged as ‘Ahmedabad’s secret guilty pleasures”. A true Amdavadi must have had this pizza atleast once in his/her lifetime for sure! The pizzas are sold at a price of Rs. 50 (affordable for students too!) and on an average they make a sale of about 600 pizzas in Ahmedabad. There are 6 varieties of pizza’s available: Italian, Jain, Cheese Baked, Plain Cheese, Double Cheese and Capsicum Onion.

You might not be impressed with the ambiance of Jasuben’s Old Pizzas joint but you certainly will be by the pizzas you will eat there. Jasuben, an entrepreneurial Gujarati lady converted the oven-baked, flat, round bread, into a desi delight. It has a crunchy and a biscuit-like crust also called ‘bhakri’ in Gujarati which is laced with sweet tomato puree which is simply delicious, sweet and tangy! It also has a humble topping of finely chopped onions and capsicum. Like I said it’s a Gujarati version, you will not find any jalapenos, olives, mushrooms or any other seasoning,  just some black pepper to flavor the gravy which is generously covered by local white cheese. It is just the right recipe to suit the local palate. If the pizza at this place is unique, so is the oven. It’s basically a steel box, with four to five trays on top of one another which can bake more than 5 pizza’s at a time!

Jasuben started this business in 1990’s with a couple named Andarben and Jorawar Singh Rajput who had moved from Pune to Ahmedabad. The oven used at their different branches was also designed and customized by Andarben. This Gujarati pizza also gained a lot of media attention in 2013  after Gujarat Chief Minister – Narendra Modi called it a leading example of female entrepreneurship in his speech at FICCI, Delhi.

Jasuben Pizza has been about 40 years and their pizzas have been a favorite among city residents especially the college crowd.  If you are new to our city and want to get a feel of the city and its people, Jasuben outlet is ‘the’ place to visit !

Go there with friends and family or even alone. Every bite is guaranteed to be yummy!
