Fanatika Theatre Club presents “Forum Theatre” – their 9th International workshop, which is based on the “Theatre of the Oppressed”, a genre and style of Brazilian theatre artist Augusto Boal.
If you are a theatre enthusiast, then there is something you should know about this form of theatre. Augusto Boal was the director at the Arena theatre and he wanted to create a theatre founded on local rather than foreign experience. It is a general practice to invite the audience for discussion at the end of a performance but according to Boal, this restricted the role of the audience as a mere viewer.
When Boal was travelling across Northern Brazil, he developed a new technique wherein the audience could stop an ongoing performance and suggestion actions to the actors who would actually carry forward the audiences’ suggestions. In most cases, the actor would be in an oppressed situation and the suggestion given by the audience changes the outcome. This was the birth of Forum theatre. He managed to create a form of theatre, which was of, by and for the people
