The Marketing Professor at our college demonstrated last week about selling ‘experiences’. Why would I, or anybody for that matter, buy a fancy chai from a fancy place at an even fancier price, when I could easily have a normal masala chai at a normal price from the building ke niche waala chaiwaala? Well, my friends, that is because we as humans are hungry for experiences and not just food.
VarieTea is a place where one may have many such experiences bundled up in a pot of chai!
A little off Prahladnagar, a seemingly tiny café underneath residential flats, opens up to an expansive two floored lounge with most tables occupied.
The orange shaded walls are adorned with paintings of kettles and painted quotes. The seating is inviting with mostly low sofas and board games. A small bell or ‘ghanti’ on each table is how you call up the staff for help. There is also a private area for occasions. The menu offers varied options of hot and cold teas, coffees, and food to go with it. Placing an order is a task in itself as customers are baffled by the immense options.
After a short mental war, we finally placed an order; Raspberry and passion flavoured green tea, a tall glass of watermelon iced tea, ginger tea cooler and a green tea mojito. Each of them was palatable and had distinct flavours. The green tea was soothing, the iced tea refreshing and the ginger cooler was detoxifying. We ordered butter garlic fries and assorted mini puffs to go with the tea. The butter garlic is a garlic lovers’ paradise. One order of those surely won’t be enough.
The staff looks disorderly and lack knowledge (yes, they still call mojito ‘mojeeto’) but that doesn’t hamper the overall experience.
Not restricted to the younger generation, VarieTea is a hub for tea and talk enthusiasts alike.
