The Popular Dessert Places in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad has turned into a paradise for dessert lovers or ‘dessertarians’ as we like to call them. In the last one year, Ahmedabad has seen a sudden rise in cafes, bakeries and F&B outlets that are focusing on desserts. Melt In on Judges Bungalow Road impresses us for yummy Italian Gelato whereas 7Violettes near University Road is a heaven if you want to experience French Desserts. Buttercupp on Sandesh Press Road brought about a cupcake revolution in Ahmedabad by launching an exclusive cupcake outlet and there were many other local bakeries like TGB and Kabhi B that followed the trend and extended their cupcake varieties. 5 Star Hotel Hyatt Ahmedabad too is promoting international desserts by hosting Doughnut promotion and gateaux promotion at their gourmet coffee shop Chocolárt. 

The Desserts We Love

Given the number of varieties available in the city, we speak to the experts to understand the dessert trends in Ahmedabad. The first obvious question is what do people love to eat? Girish Ganeshan, General Manager – Hyatt Ahmedabad shares his insights and tell us, “Muffins, flavoured with Vanilla, Chocolate-Chips, Carrot are really popular. People also like Chocolate brownie with low-calorie chocolate, with toffee sauce. Black forest pastry with French cream ellevira and fresh cherries is popular at Chocolárt. Amongst French and Italian Desserts, Italian dessert-Tiramisu and Panacotta with authentic recipe is certainly popular. Philadelphia cheese cake with blueberry is another popular dessert. French Crum Brulee in its authentic recipe is a very popular dessert.

For years, desserts in Ahmedabad were limited to a few popular flavours like chocolate, strawberry and mango. But now desserts are getting quirky flavours and Amdavadis are accepting them whole heartedly. Commenting on the popular flavours that are in demand for cupcakes and birthday cakes, Executive Chef Satej Saigaonkar from Courtyard by Marriott, Ahmedabad said, “In cupcakes people like to explore on invented culinaire version, which has unique dessert topping i.e. tiramisu, cheesecake, crumble, le chocolatiere, wild forest mascarpone. Also healthy versions are getting popularity, carrot & raisin, Apple honey, Apricot polenta.For birthday cakes with all decorative designs people still go for chocolate bases with the addition, i.e, fererro rocher, chocolate hazelnut, chocolate marquise, menthol chocolate, sacher.”

With Diwali around the corner, the demand for sweets is at an all time high. The biggest dilemma this year is obviously whether to go with traditional Kaju Katlis or replace them with gorgeous cupcakes? According to Executive Chef Satej Saigaonkar “The traditional desserts are replaced by 2 types of clientele one who like Fusion dessert preparations, i.e. Baked chikoo Halwa, Thandai cheese cake, sitafal cheese cake, Rose petal tiramisu. Others are health conscious people who are looking for fruit, nuts or cereal based sweets i.e., Oat & honey bars, wine poached pears, baked apple, frozen yogurts, parfaits.”

Owing to extensive travel and exposure, as well as the entry of internationally trained chefs in Ahmedabad, global dessert trends and fusion desserts are on a rise in Ahmedabad. Dessert sales are at an all time high but can we really let go of our customary Kaju Katli this Diwali? Let us know your opinion on this matter.
