Going by the number of golf clubs being set up in Ahmedabad, it seems the game is set to emerge as a mass sport of sorts and shed its ‘elite’ tag in the near future.
Once a ‘rich man’s game’, numerous recreation clubs and resorts have sniffed an opportunity in golf as all the generations are being part of the game.
“Golf is catching up with all the age groups in Ahmedabad. Unlike what it used to be in earlier days when only elite people or retired citizens were into it, nowadays from 8 to 80 years, all strata of society & business are attracted to it in Ahmedabad and other cities of Gujarat like Baroda, Bharuch etc.” says Shailesh Goyal, an entrepreneur & communication consultant who also picked up golf recently.
“For some it’s a pass time activity, while for many others it’s a serious play, to the extent like its leading them to alternate career” expressed Anush Iyer, an engineering student who began golfing last year but is now playing in various tournaments!
Compared to metros, the city boasts of just a handful of golf courses, including the Kensville Golf and Country Club, Gulmohar Greens, Kalhaar Blues and Greens. However, there are several more in the pipeline..
The Ahmedabad Elite Golfers Association (TAEGA) was established in August 2006, solely works to popularize Golf and acts as a catalyst in the development of Golf as a sport.
