Its like Ahmedabad is landing its way in each event. On 27th Jan, The Tour de Ahmedabad cyclothon was the first official cycling test for Amdavadis. Whirring of wheels and clunking of gears ruled the city roads early on Sunday, drew more than 4,500 cyclists from India and abroad. While a few load their hands on prizes , it was more of a joy ride through the city.
The race consisted of three categories, the longest being the “century race” spanning 105km. The “half-century race” covers 48km, and the “dream ride” was spread over 18km. Nitin Patel, the state health and finance minister, flagged off the race at 7 am from the Sabarmati Riverfront near Vallabh Sadan in the presence of senior Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) officials.
While hundreds took part in events that carried prize money, children joined the Dream Ride of 18 km, which did not fetch them any trophy, and wherein registration was free. “We wanted to prove that even we as kids can compete and ride with professional cyclists and can successfully complete the ride,” quipped Arjun Puri, 12, of Mahatma Gandhi International School.
Amongst all this fun and enthusiasm , there were pretty big obstacles of traffic , even though Addressing the media on Wednesday, municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra said, “Necessary traffic arrangements have been made to ensure that the event goes on smoothly. The AMTS, BRTS and ST buses will be diverted to different routes till the event gets over.”
He also said that discussions with highway authorities, Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) and traffic department have taken place for route mapping and necessary arrangements on the route.
Its but natural , if there is any event involved , there is some problems with traffic , citizens were caught unawares when they took out their cars and packed picnic boxes in the morning and got to know that roads were closed. Others who suffered included passengers rushing to the airport.
All in all it was a success with few hurdles here & there which were taken care of . Also the civic body arranged for special teams of cycle mechanics along the entire route. A medical team and a team of volunteers supplying energy drinks was also arranged along those routes.
