They say, “Stand up for something, even if it means standing alone. Because often, the one who flies solo has the strongest wings.”
Perhaps this was the sentiment that motivated Mahatma Gandhi to lead the Swadeshi Movement and it is the same sentiment that artist Sajal Sasanka Sarkar has represented in his brand new series – Rethinking Swadeshi!
Marvel Art Gallery and curator Chaitya Dhanvi Shah present the solo exhibition titled “Rethinking Swadeshi” by Sajal Sasanka Sarkar. The series features great Indian freedom fighters and the unsung heroes who started and encouraged the Swadeshi Movement. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bhulabhai Desai, Bipin Chandra Pal, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, Sri Aurobindo etc. have been brought to life through beautiful sketches in this series.
The artist believes in capturing his original thoughts about what he thinks of the troubles around us. The problems we confront every day. The problems that need to be handled in a collective manner. And it is his paintings and colours on the canvas, that communicated to us the ways to solve them.
There are several themes that have been touched upon by the artist in this series. The most prominent theme is that of Mahatma Gandhi, his life journey and his beliefs. The other themes included in the series are freedom fighters, the food crisis in India and the Swadeshi Movement. His interpretations and representations of each of these themes were unique and reflect upon his ideologies of Being Swadeshi and being self sufficient in today’s modern era.
The solo exhibition is on till the 9th of February 2014 between 4.00 PM to 7.00 PM at Marvel Art Gallery on S.G Highway.
