Ever since the first time I saw the Indian themed merchandise sold by Chumbak, I was eagerly awaiting for products based on the theme of Ahmedabad. But all I ever got to see was an Ahmedabad mug designed by Chumbak. Disappointed by the lack of choices available, I have always been on a lookout for some funky kitsch products that reflect the true spirit of Ahmedabad.
At last, my search came to an end. All thanks to NID graduate Jyoti Mann. Jyoti has designed and produced three products based on the theme of Ahmedabad:
- The Manek Chowk playing cards
- The illustrated screen printed map
- Notebooks with the monuments on it
Interesting choice of products, isn’t it? What’s more interesting is the reason why Jyoti designed these products and gave Ahmedabad souvenirs that both locals and tourists would love to treasure.
Jyoti, a Punjabi girl born and raised in Delhi, came to Ahmedabad as a student at NID. She spent 3 years in the city and fell it love with it. The peace and calmness of the city swept her heart away while at the same the nights and festivity thrilled her. As her tenure at NID is approaching its end, Jyoti wanted to pay a tribute to the city. And what better way to do something, then what you are good at. For Jyoti, it was Graphics!
Thus Jyoti started researching around her favorite places in Ahmedabad. Her first destination was Manek Chowk. She had visited the place for college projects, for pav bhaji dinners and post dinner coffees. After visiting Manek Chowk numerous times and exploring it thoroughly, she realized that the place had a beautiful contrast within it. It was highly festive in nature, with wedding material shops all around and the really amazing street food stalls.Yet it was surrounded by the Rani no Haziro and Badshah no Haziro, the place of the burial. This very fact made her wonder and she pondered over it a lot. It is this very contrast that she depicted on the either sides of the Manek Chowk playing cards.
The design of the map was more to do with the traveling she did around Ahmedabad as a student. Once she was done travelling around Ahmedabad and capturing it on camera, she wanted to have all these wonderful places on a single sheet. Thus, she sketched out a map of Ahmedabad city. Post sketching, she printed them on fabric and made products that passionate people like herself would love taking back home. In a way she created a piece of Ahmedabad that would stay with her no matter where she went! Commenting on her products, an enthusiastic Jyoti Mann says, ” My products are for people who love the city. It’s a tribute to Ahmedabad city from an outsider who has been accepted and has been given immense love!”
We love Jyoti’s sentiment towards Ahmedabad and flaunting her products makes us feel all the more proud of our city Ahmedabad. If you too want to buy Ahmedabad Souvenirs, then email on shop.jyotimanndesigns@gmail.
